Evening/Weekend Leagues
Evening and weekend leagues are organized by ratings so that all players in each league are competitive with each other. Scores are recorded for all matches and feed into algorithms that generate ratings for every player. Players move up or down through the leagues depending on their record of wins and losses in league games.
Step 1 – Get Started
In order to figure out which leagues new players should enter, we have a gateway league. New players play games in Gateway until they have a rating which determines the league that they start in.

Step 2 – Join a League
After playing sufficient games in Gateway to earn a rating, new players are placed in a league at their level. From that point forward they can work their way up or stay with a level they enjoy.

Summer Box Leagues
Summer box leagues give our players opportunities to play and earn ratings as a doubles team with partners they trust. This option is preferred by players who would rather not earn ratings through random-partner drop-in activities.
In order to participate, signup for one of these leagues:
- Summer Box League – Ladies Doubles (Registration closed August 1 – Starting again May 1, 2025)
- Summer Box League – Men’s Doubles (Registration closed August 1 – Starting again May 1, 2025)
- Summer Box League – Mixed Doubles (Registration closed August 1 – Starting again May 1, 2025)
HOW OUR SUMMER BOX LEAGUES WORK
One the first day of the month, new boxes are released. Each team in each box must contact the other teams in their box and arrange to play a match in the first half of the month. Games can be played anywhere that all four players agree to play, including free public courts.
Teams are awarded one point for each game won.
At the end of the month, the team with the fewest points moves down one box (if there is a box to move down to). The team with the most points moves up one box (if there is a box to move up to).
Register as a team by selecting one of the leagues above.
2025 Box League Teams
All teams (both players) must register on Signup Genius and then follow these instructions.
Choose a team captain then have the captain email coach@mycedarbrae.ca with the following information:
- The name of your team
- The name of your team captain
- The name of your team’s second player
Please read the Box League Rules (below) to understand the role of the captain.
Once all three slots in the tables below are filled, new teams are eligible to participate.

Box League Rules
- Teams consist of two players.
- Players must be current members of CCLA PICKLEBALL at all times during participation.
- Players must be registered in Cedarbrae’s club (CLA) on pickleballbrackets.com.
- Each team must have a name.
- Each team must have one designated captain who will handle communications and scheduling.
- Team names follow team captains. (This is important. If the team breaks up, the captain retains the team’s name — if they want it.)
- Team captains determine the rosters of their teams. (This is important. The captain alone decides who is on the team.)
- After the boxes are released at the beginning of the month, team captains talk to each other to set up the matches. (Email addresses are provided to Team Captains upon request.)
- All matches should be played either indoors at Cedarbrae or outdoors. Matches can be played anywhere that all match participants agree to play.
- With the permission of drop-in hosts, league matches may be played during drop-in times. However, it must be stressed that this is to occur only with express permission of the hosts. Moreover, no player in this league should pressure any drop-in organizer to permit league matches. Players who complain about or otherwise harass hosts over this issue may be removed from the league.
- Each match consists of three games and can be played in less than one hour. Game winners must win by at least two points. Ties are not accepted. Please note: all three games must be played and recorded, regardless of who wins the first two.
- Matches must be reported by email to coach@mycedarbrae.ca before the end of the 25th day of the month. Matches reported after that cannot be counted. Captains of both teams must report the results to Coach. Information must include the following:
- Scores of all games
- Whether or not games are to also be reported to DUPR
- Teams are awarded one point for playing the match PLUS one point for each game won – to a maximum of four points per match.
- All match results are reported by Coach to Cedarbrae’s club on pickleballbrackets.com. All match results are used by Pickleball Brackets’ rating system to compile individual player ratings. DUPR is optional but recommended and must be agreed upon by all four players before the match begins.
- New teams joining the ladder may be inserted anywhere at the sole discretion of Coach. This is done so that highly rated players do not have to start below their level and spend months working their way up against weaker teams.
- Teams who are late forfeit one game every 15 minutes. Teams that are 45 minutes late forfeit all three games.
- At the end of the month, all points are tallied. The top team in each box that can be moved up will be moved up to the next box. The team with the fewest points will be moved down.
- New teams will be inserted by the league after sorting takes place. In some cases, this may result in some teams being bumped back down.
- In the event of a total points tie, the current order of the list shall prevail.
- These rules may be changed at any time without prior notice.
- Prior to the start of Game 1, the team captains shall engage in a back-to-back Rock Paper Scissors Duel. The winning captain may choose the ball that all three games will be played with. The other captain will choose starting side as well as serve or receive.
- Teams shall change sides after every game.
TIPS
Do not procrastinate. Teams who play early in the month will rise. Team that procrastinate will sink. That’s how box leagues work.
Play all three games. Earn one point for every game you win. This is not best-of-three. If you only win two games, you can only earn two points.
Provided all four players are in agreement, all three games do not have to be played in the same session. If you are trying to get games in during recreational drop-in times, you may decide to play all three games over three different days. When doing so, showing up early for drop-in and putting all four paddles together in the rack for the first game of the session is one way to ensure that you can get your box league match in.
