Ratings

Players who wish to play pickleball in our evening or weekend leagues, must have a numerical rating.

Ratings help us provide a satisfying pickleball experience because they help us create groups of players who are at the same level.

This page contains everything you need to know about leagues, ratings, and rated programs.

Numerical Ratings

It is important to understand the difference between coach ratings and numerical ratings. Coach ratings are an individual coach’s subjective estimation of a player’s relative skill level. Numerical ratings are earned in competition with other players.

Only numerical ratings are accepted at Cedarbrae. Players wishing to enter rated programs must provide acceptable evidence of one of the following numerical ratings.

Canadian Tournament Player Rating (CTPR)Minimum 15 games
Pickleball Brackets Club Rating (CPA)Minimum 25 games
Pickleball Brackets Rating (PBB)Minimum 25 games
Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR)Minimum 50 games
Qualification Requirements at Cedarbrae

Programs have different rating requirements. Check each program to learn about its requirements.

Dynamic Ratings vs Static Ratings

It is equally important to understand the difference between static and dynamic ratings.

Static ratings need only be achieved once for a defined period of time. Once achieved, the player’s rating remains fixed at that number for the duration of the time stated. So, for example, a player who has qualified for a 3.5+ program with a static rating requirement will remain qualified for that program for a period of time even if their rating falls while participating in that program.

Dynamic ratings move up and down with each game played. Programs with dynamic qualification requirements require players to meet the qualification requirements each time they register. Therefore a player may enter a drop-in with a minimum 3.5 rating, lose some games, and see their rating drop below 3.5. They would not then be able to go back to that drop-in again until their rating is once again over the minimum qualification requirement.

When registering for programs, it is important to read the description to determine A) if the program’s qualification requirements are static or dynamic and B) if you qualify.

How to Earn a Rating

To earn numerical ratings, participate in any of these activities. Ratings become official once you have played one of the following:

  • 25 PBB games or
  • 50 DUPR games or
  • 15 CTPR games
OPTION 1 – Drop-in

If you do not have a regular group of people to play with, this is your best option. All you have to do is register, then show up and play. This is the best option for players who are new to pickleball, new to our club, or new to the city.

OPTION 2 – Box Leagues

If you play regularly and have a partner you trust, then box leagues may be the best way to earn a rating because you will play all of your games with your preferred partner. This is the best option for teams that like to play together.

OPTION 3 – Play with other Club Members

In addition to the programs above, club members may play and report games on their own. This is the best option for established players who want to enter our competitive stream without having to go through the drop-in program or the box league.

Play with other players and report the results to our club. As long as all four players are registered for our club on Pickleball Brackets, Coach can enter your game results. Please contact coach@mycedarbrae.ca with your scores.

OPTION 4 – Play in Sanctioned Tournaments

Players who have played in nationally sanctioned pickleball tournaments in Canada will have a Canadian Tournament Player Rating Rating (CTPR) recorded in Pickleball Brackets (PBB). We accept CTPR ratings as valid provided a total of no less than 15 CTPR games have been recorded in your profile in PBB.

OPTION 5 – Play in Another PBB Club

Some players joining our club have played Pickleball Brackets (PBB) games with previous clubs. As long as a minimum of 25 games have been recorded in your profile in PBB, we will accept your numerical rating as valid and you will start with that rating in our club.

OPTION 6 – Play DUPR games

Some players joining our club have played DUPR games previously. As long as a minimum of 50 games have been recorded in DUPR, we will accept your rating as valid and you will start with that numerical rating in our club.

How to Check Your Current Rating

Pickleball Brackets Ratings

Here is where you can check your Pickleball Brackets rating:

  1. Login to https://pickleballbrackets.com
  2. Hover over your name in the top right corner then choose MY STUFF
  3. Click on the light blue STATS button
  4. Click on the link that says TOTAL CLUBS
  5. Choose CALGARY PICKLEBALL ACADEMY – CEDARBRAE

The numbers you want to look at are circled or underlined.

The underlined numbers are the number of games that you have played in each category.

MIX is the number of MF/MF games you have reported. DOUBLES is all other doubles games you have reported.

Once the total number of MIX and DOUBLES games is greater than or equal to 25, you have sufficient games for qualification.

The circled numbers are your current ratings for each category.

As long as either you MIX rating or your DOUBLES rating is within the range specified for the program in which you wish to register, you are qualified — unless the program description states otherwise.

DUPR

Here is where you can check you DUPR:

  1. Login to https://mydupr.com
  2. Click on the PERFORMANCE tab

Your current doubles DUPR appears under the word DOUBLES.

The circled number to the right of DOUBLES is your DUPR RELIABLITY RATING.

To calculate the total number of DOUBLES games you have reported, add WINS to LOSSES.

If the total is greater that or equal to 50, you have sufficient games for qualification.

As long as your DOUBLES DUPR is within the range specified for the program in which you wish to register, you are qualified.

Once You Have Earned a Rating

Once you have earned a numerical rating, these may become options for you.

As you play and report your scores, algorithms will determine a numerical rating for you somewhere between 1.0 and 7.0. This rating will help you find games and activities in which you will be competitive with other players.
